Dorothy Sayer Quotes
"St. Thomas Aquinas Tutorial has breathed new life into my tired spirit. After 16 years of home education, I had come to believe I had nothing left to give my seven year old daughter. The two full class days per week at STAT have given us all a balance: rest for mom, and academic, spiritual, and social enrichment for my children. I'm enjoying the journey again!

Academics
The STAT program is designed to offer a thorough education that follows the pattern of the classical Trivium. Covering the required "subjects" but designed to teach children to inquire, to examine and to think for themselves, the STAT program offers children the opportunity to truly learn and fosters a love of learning. STAT uses the Mother of Divine Grace Curriculum, written by Laura Berquist to incorporate the phases and methods of the classical Trivium. By offering the program to small classes of children, with flexibility for grade placement, STAT accomplishes something that a homeschooling program conducted solely at home can not: competition and social engagement coupled with accountability outside the home.
The tutorial is a hybrid of the home-school and the classroom. Affording the advantages of classroom dynamics, while immersing the child in the life of his home, we seek to provide a complete education of the person and prepare him for an active Christian life that includes both engagement with peers and the development of a home-based sanctuary for personal and familial growth - spiritual, intellectual and emotional.
A typical academic week at STAT might be as follows:
Monday: parents or students log into the STAT moodle group to retrieve assignments prepared by the tutors for home study that day. Through a combination of self-directed work and parent instruction, the child completes the assignments. Some assignments are graded by parents, and some are turned in to tutors for grading. Because there is no "busy work" in the curriculum, most home-work can be completed in approximately 3 hours, leaving time for additional activities (e.g., chores or outings).
Tuesday: the child is dropped off at STAT at 8:30am to begin the day. Children receive religious instruction appropriate to their grade level, followed by math. Math abilities vary and all math instruction is offered at the same time during the day to facilitate appropriate placement. A child advanced in math, for instance, will move to a different classroom to take an upper level math course. The child will receive additional instruction the remainder of the day using the classical method, in a classroom setting, and in subjects covered by the curriculum. These subjects include grammar, spelling, reading, writing, poetry, Latin, geography, science and physical education. Children will receive graded work back from tutors. Students must bring lunch. The STAT course schedule for the current school year is here: Schedule. Dismissal and pickup are at 3:30pm.
Wednesday: Same as Monday. Parents or students retrieve assignments from the STAT Moodle site for completion at home.
Thursday: Same as Tuesday.
Friday: Same as Monday. Parents or students retrieve assignments from the STAT Moodle site for completion at home. Once per quarter, a STAT fieldtrip is planned and all STAT students, parents and siblings are invited to attend.
STAT covers 180 school days and is broken out into four quarters. Standardized testing is offered once per year for educational assessment and to prepare students to take standardized tests later in their academic careers.
